Poster of a small French Riviera harbor, with houses and sailboats, framed on a wall

Decorating your home with seaside posters means bringing a fragment of summer home. The smell of sea air, golden light on the beach cabins, the sound of the waves. It is what the illustrators of the PLM and SNCF posters have been doing for a century.

The trap of seaside decor is accumulation: seashells, fishing nets, hanging buoys. You quickly end up in a caricature of a boat house. The trick is to choose ONE statement piece and let the wall breathe. Graphic restraint makes all the difference.

Étretat and its cliffs, Cassis and its Calanques, Mont Saint-Michel at low tide, Royan, its big beach and the bell tower of Notre-Dame. On our posters, each destination becomes a balanced Art Deco composition. A light wood frame and an off-white mat can complete the mood.

The seaside spirit in a poster, without the vacation rental look

Seaside decor suffers from decorative overuse. Vacations in Saint-Malo, a rental in La Baule, an Airbnb in Biarritz: everyone has seen a thousand interiors with nautical anchors, salvaged ropes and XXL buoys hanging on the wall. True seaside decor, the kind that lasts year-round in a primary home, is more discreet, more French, more rooted in place.

The trap: falling into the vacation rental look

Everyone has seen these cliché seaside decors: navy anchors, plaster starfish, “Welcome aboard” lettering, fishing nets hanging from the ceiling. That is the trap. Successful seaside decor avoids ALL of these obvious signs and chooses suggestion.

1. A terracotta and deep blue palette, never turquoise

The key rule: a chic seaside look is never turquoise. It is terracotta, ocher and deep blue, the palette of 1930s PLM posters. Saturated turquoise looks basic, looks like a beach rental, looks like a Tahiti Hilton.

2. Illustration rather than photography

A high-definition beach photo looks like a cheap poster. A stylized illustration of a harbor (Cassis, Bandol, Saint-Malo) looks like a collector’s piece. The graphic gesture is what sets it apart.

3. 3 pieces maximum, generous sizes

No more than 3 posters on a single wall. A2 or A1 for the centerpiece. It is the opposite of the vacation rental that multiplies small frames. Chic seaside decor is both rare and large-format.

4. Subjects that suggest instead of shouting

A lighthouse silhouette instead of a map of lighthouses. A lone sailboat in the distance instead of a regatta. A detail of a pastel facade instead of a postcard. Always suggest, never explain.

5. A slim frame, black metal or light wood

A slim frame is a must for a chic seaside spirit. Avoid thick frames in driftwood or woven straw (too obvious). Matte black metal or light wood (oak, beech) are the options that never go out of date.

Designing a seaside triptych

The ideal triptych: 1 landscape harbor panorama in A2 at the center, with 2 vertical A4 portrait silhouettes on either side (lighthouse + sailboat or lighthouse + cliff). Identical matte black metal frames. Leave 4 cm between frames.

Chic seaside decor is an exercise in restraint. Anything that says “sea” outright (anchors, starfish, shells) should be banned. Anything that merely suggests it (palette, format, stylized illustration) is welcome. It’s the art of evocation over literal illustration.

Frequently asked questions

You often ask us

Which poster subjects suit a seaside home?

1930s French beaches (Deauville, La Baule, Saint-Tropez), Breton lighthouses, fishing scenes, antique sailboats, Belle Époque bathers, nautical charts. Avoid anchors and ropes.

Which colors work for seaside decor?

Navy blue, off-white, pearl gray, rooftop terracotta, moss green. 4 colors maximum. Avoid tropical aqua and turquoise blue.

Which frame suits a seaside poster?

Light wood (oak, beech) or weathered driftwood, sometimes paired with a 5 mm ivory mat. Avoid brushed metal and gold.

Which size suits a seaside poster?

Vertical format for lighthouses and sailboats (A2 or A1). Horizontal format for beach landscapes. A triptych of 3 vertical A3 posters for a living room wall.

Which pitfalls should you avoid in seaside decor?

Piles of nautical anchors, ropes everywhere, oversized life buoys on the wall, navy and white stripes on every cushion. A suggested spirit beats a shouted one.
